Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm belongs to the class of medication called antibacterial agents primarily used to treat bacterial skin infections like acne (pimples). Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm is an organic compound with an irritant, keratolytic (remove warts, calluses), comedolytic (inhibits the formation of blemishes), and anti-inflammatory activity. Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells.

Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm contains ‘Benzoyl Peroxide’ that kills bacteria, reduces inflammation and unplugs blocked pores. Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm decomposes to release oxygen when applied to the skin. This oxygen acts as a bactericidal agent and kills Propionibacterium acnes, the bacteria that causes acne. Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm increases the turnover rate of epithelial cells (cells that line the surface of the skin), eventually helping in peeling the skin and treating commodes (skin-colored, small bumps due to acne). Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm also has a mild drying effect that allows excess oils and dirt to be washed away from the skin.

Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, eyelids, lips, mouth and nose. If the medicine comes in contact with any of these areas, rinse with water immediately. Do not use Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm on sunburned, windburned, dry, or irritated skin. Common side effects of Benzac Ac 2.5% Gel 20 gm include dry skin, erythema (skin redness), burning sensation, itching, skin irritation, swelling, blistering, crusting, and skin rash. Directions for Use

Benzoyl Peroxide is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Cream/Gel/Lotion: Apply the advised amount of gel/lotion/cream with clean and dry hands on the skin’s affected areas. Gently massage the medicine into the skin with your fingers. Wash your hands before and after applying. Do not put dressing or bandage on the affected areas.  Foam: Apply a generous amount on to the affected areas with hands and massage it with fingers. Rinse off with clean water.  Cleansing bar/Soap: Work the soap into a nice lather and apply it to the affected areas with your hands. Gently massage in circular motions and rinse off with clean water.

Drug Interactions

Drug-Drug Interaction: Benzoyl Peroxide may interact with other drugs treating acne (isotretinoin, tretinoin, trifarotene, adapalene), and dermatological medications (bexarotene, dapsone).

Use mild soap while taking baths and prefer warm baths.

Do not walk barefoot at places like gym showers to prevent bacterial infections.

Special Advise

Consult your dermatologist if you do not notice any improvement after 4-6 weeks of treatment with Benzoyl Peroxide .

If the acne doesn’t improve, ultrasound scanning of the abdomen is advised to check if there is any possibility of PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease).
